Torino 2006….bloggers began working as journalists
Beijing 2008…media organizations employed citizen journalists to cover the streets
Vancouver 2010…the first Olympic social media centre created
London 2012…a national Olympic & Paralympic citizen journalism newswire was established called #media2012.
Welcome to #media2012, the go-to citizen newswire for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic cultural and community news, covering a range of local, regional and national interest stories and operating as a nationwide newswire during the Games. As the world’s largest media gather around the Games, we champion media participation and free to use, open content.
This website is the portal to the #media2012 community, providing key information for regions and reporters. If you have an Olympic or Paralympic event you want reporting, we can find you people to cover it and broadcast it for you to an international audience.
#media2012 is a community of reporters that aims to create a social media legacy for the London 2012 Games. We are building partnerships with organizations and individuals who want to create a collective citizen media network during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. So far, we have 7 regions within the United Kingdom engaged and a number of international partners, notably in recent and future Olympic Games sites.
Media centres around the UK will draw in stories from the Nations and Regions, affecting the core media narrative about the Games and building a new media legacy for the Olympic Movement. They will also reach out to citizen media communities internationally.
The launch of the proposal took place as part of the Abandon Normal Devices festival and included Ruth Mackenzie, Director of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and has since met every few months to address progress and develop a Games time strategy.
